Investigation Posts as Rep. Bryan Steil holds hearing on “American Confidence in Elections”
Washington, D.C. – A stunning new report in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel revealed that Chairman Steil and the Committee on House Administration hired a former Trump campaign staffer involved in efforts to overturn the 2020 election in Arizona. This comes ahead of Chairman Steil’s hearing examining “American Confidence in Elections,” placing his hypocrisy center stage.
According to the Journal Sentinel, the House Administration Committee hired former Trump aide Thomas Lane to work as an elections counsel and director of election coalitions in February. Last June, Mr. Lane was subpoenaed by the Department of Justice for his role in a scheme to declare a fake slate of electors in Arizona and undermine our electoral process.
Chairman Steil attempted to deflect questions about hiring Mr. Lane, calling him a “junior staffer” and claiming that his work for the Trump campaign was not relevant to his work on the committee, which Steil described as “assisting in us moving forward our agenda of key voter integrity laws.” Mr. Lane is being paid $155,000/year, according to committee records.
Responding to the story on Wednesday, Rep. Mark Pocan critiqued Mr. Lane’s role on the committee: “Overseeing elections should not be left to people who tried to overturn the 2020 election.”
